FAQ
What are the phases of the Moon?
There are eight main phases: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent. A full cycle takes about 29.5 days.
How is the moon phase calculated?
The tool uses astronomical formulas for the positions of the Moon and Sun. The exact times of new moon, quarters and full moon are accurate to a few minutes, and illumination to a fraction of a percent.
How long is a lunar cycle?
On average 29.53 days, but individual cycles range from about 29.3 to 29.8 days because the Moon's orbital speed varies.
Why does the Moon look mirrored in the Southern Hemisphere?
The lit part appears on the opposite side there. The picture on this page shows the view from the Northern Hemisphere.
