Character and Word Counter Online

A free tool for instantly counting characters, words, sentences, and paragraphs in text. It estimates reading time and speaking time aloud, and checks whether your text fits the limits of popular platforms — SMS, X/Twitter, and SEO meta tags.

What the counter shows

Characters and words
Counts characters with and without spaces, the number of words, sentences, and paragraphs in real time — right as you type, with no buttons or delays.
Hello world! → 2 words, 12 characters
Reading and speaking time
Estimates how long it will take to read the text (≈200 words/min) or to speak it aloud (≈130 words/min) — useful for scripts, podcasts, and presentations.
500 words ≈ 2.5 min reading, 3.9 min speaking
Platform limits
Checks whether your text fits the limits of popular services: SMS (160), an X/Twitter post (280), an SEO meta description (160), a page title (60), an Instagram caption (2200).
245/280 characters for X — still fits

When this is useful

  • Writing social media posts within character limits (X, Instagram)
  • SEO — checking title and meta description length before publishing
  • Preparing SMS messages without splitting them into multiple parts
  • Estimating the length of a speech or podcast by word count
  • Meeting length requirements for essays, articles, or academic papers
  • Checking technical limits of form fields and databases

How to use

  1. Paste or type text into the input field
  2. Statistics update automatically as you type
  3. Check whether your text fits popular platform limits
  4. Copy the text with the "⎘" button if needed

Frequently Asked Questions

Are characters counted with or without spaces?
The tool shows both separately: "Characters" (with spaces) and "No spaces" — use whichever your platform or task requires.
How is reading time calculated?
Based on the average adult reading speed — about 200 words per minute. Speaking time is based on 130 words per minute, an average speech pace.
Why might the X (Twitter) character count differ from the official one?
X counts certain characters (like links or emoji) using special weighting rules. This tool shows a standard Unicode character count, which is close to but not always exactly identical to X's internal counter.
What are "UTF-8 bytes"?
The size of the text in bytes when encoded as UTF-8. Cyrillic and other non-Latin characters take up 2 bytes instead of 1 — this matters for SMS and some database limits.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No. All counting happens entirely in your browser. Text is never sent to any server.
